FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our superior deckboard, as compared to five-quarter board used by many other deck contractors and builders, will add years to your deck, ensuring the best return on your investment.

This board is less likely to cup or twist due to it being a superior grade and is made by the manufacturer specifically for decks! Imagine that! A deckboard specifically milled for the sole purpose of outdoors! It is #1 grade, 2x6 parafin-treated .40 (ground contact specification) pressure-treated deckboard.

What type of support will be used?
We dig all postholes at least 12" deep. Code dictates that holes must be dug as deep as the frost line, which is 6" in the Atlanta area. We then pour concrete into each hole. We like the footers to be at least 8" in circumference. We use 6x6 pressure treated posts depending upon load of area. The posts are set directly on the concrete footer, the the posts are squared up, braces, then anchored to the concrete.

What type of structure will be used?
The ledger is usually 2x10 or 2x12 stock, which is bolted to the frame of the house. Because this is such a critical component in the structure of the deck, we use added measures to ensure that the attachment is a strong one. If attaching to the frame of the house, we carriage bolt the ledger to the rim joist of the house. If attaching to concrete or masonry, we pre-drill holes and use carriage bolts. Additionally, we install flashing and seal all the bolts (when needed) with silicone to make sure that no water will penetrate the house. The lumber is bolted on either side of the posts using either 3/8" or 1/2" carriage bolts.

What supports will be used for the railing?
The support for the railing primarily comes from the 4x4 posts. That is why we glue and bolt all of the posts used for the railing to the rim joists. For additional support, we screw the balusters directly to the rim joist. This combination of bolting the posts and screwing the balusters to the rim joists makes a very sturdy railing.

What type of hardware is used?
We use stainless steel screws and nails in order to prevent rust. Our fasteners are hot-dipped galvanized steel.

What type of joists will be used?
We use either 2x10 or 2x8 pressure treated lumber for the joists. Some codes allow for 2x6 joists, but you will not see 2x6's used as joists on any of our decks. Code also requires a minimum of 40 pounds per square foot as the load requirement, but a deck by Kellogg Construction is always designed for a minimum of 60 lbs/sq. ft. This takes springiness out of the deck and gives piece of mind to the customer. In other words, don't worry about having big parties!

How do I care for my project after it's constructed?
We recommend staining your deck projects shortly after they're built. You can have a clear coat or a stain with color. Anything to protect the wood from the outdoor elements is great. Plus, not staining your deck will void our warranty and we know you don't want that..
